Buriram seek Kashima lifeline

03/11/2026 23:06:00

Buriram United host Kashima Antlers in the AFC Champions League Elite on Wednesday, needing a result to revive a campaign that has so far produced no victories.

The Thai club have taken two points from their three matches. The Japanese visitors sit top of the East Zone table with the maximum nine points.

Kashima, who won the competition in 2018, have been the standout side in the group stage, with 11 goals, the most by any team, and just one conceded.

They have never faced Buriram before, but have lost only one of their last five matches against Thai clubs.

History offers Buriram little comfort, as they have beaten Japanese opponents only twice in 20 meetings.

Their last home match ended in a 1-0 defeat by Beijing of China, which will have pricked their confidence at a ground where they had lost only one of their previous 10 Champions League games.

New head coach Raul Caneda is looking to deliver Buriram's first three points of the tournament. Kick-off at Buriram Stadium is at 7.15pm.

Chonburi win again

Saharat Sontisawat scored the winner as Chonburi beat BG Pathum United 1-0 in the Thai League 1 at Chonburi Stadium on Monday night, to claim all three points.

Both sides attacked with intent in a goalless first half, before heavy rain led the referee to suspend play for 40 minutes in the second period.

The hosts returned strongly and, in the 64th minute, Stenio Junior set up Saharat, whose shot from a few yards gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead.

The Rabbits tried to respond but could not break down the Chonburi defence. It is Chonburi's second win of the season, lifting them to 14th on six points, while BG Pathum are 10th on nine.

Chonburi interim coach Witthaya Laohakul said: "We won, but the team still played below standard and there are many details. We are not doing well. Analysis shows that, of the 16 teams, we rank 16th in scoring but fourth in defence, and today we showed how strong we are, especially in the air."

Witthaya said coaches from Japan, South Korea and Brazil had attended the match, and that he wanted a new coach appointed quickly while ensuring continuity for the players.

BG Pathum interim coach Peerapong Pichitchotirat said: "We thought at the start that playing Chonburi on their home ground would be difficult, and we could not play our game at all. We praise Chonburi for their preparation. They deserved to win."

Chonburi next face Port FC on Saturday, Nov 7, at PAT Stadium.
